“Great Scott.”

Are you sure all your words are spelled correctly in your book?

In this editing tip let’s celebrate October 21st, the day when Marty McFly made his iconic leap through time in the second movie, Back to the Future II.

Have you seen the movie? Remember these unforgettable lines?

You are my density!

You are my destiny!

Similar words? Not at all. Different meanings. Different words. But mess up a few keys on the keyboard and your character will be telling the woman of his dreams that she is his density.

In Back to the Future, the first movie Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) meets his father in the 50’s diner. He’s convinced his very nervous young father to tell his hopeful soon-to-be girlfriend and later wife Lorraine that she is his destiny and instead he says you are my density.

“I’m your density. I mean your destiny.” Says George McFly.

Think this won’t happen to your character? Why? Because spellcheck picks it up, right? Maybe! Maybe not!

Each word is spelled correctly but does your editing software know the difference in the definitions.

This is where a proofreader plays a vital role in the success of an author’s book for several reasons;

Attention to Detail – a fresh set of eyes to catch small but significant details that can impact the overall quality of the book like typo’s, misspelled words, punctuation, identifying who said what.

Checking for consistency for a polished and professional appearance.

Conveying the author’s message accurately to the reader.

When you’ve only got seconds to keep the reader engaged you want to make sure your text is flawless.
