“Writing happens when you stay consistent and keep encouraging yourself that it’s okay to put words on the page.”  – Rebecca Camarena, author

Distractions keep you from writing.  Whether they’re good or bad, short or long, quick or involved with or without lots of drama, they’re distractions all the same.

You can let the distraction keep you from writing. You can blame the distractions for your inability to write. You can blame others who keep you from writing. But how long will you react negatively to the distractions? It’s not healthy for you, physically or mentally.

It’s not so much the distractions that need to go away it’s your reason for writing that needs to be stronger.  Your why!

Here’s some tips to get back to your writing.

  • Think about why you write. Is it your passion? Is it what you really want to do? Could you not write? Author John Steinbeck is quoted as saying, “I write nearly as often as I breathe.” Can you claim that?
  • Journal about the distractions.  Why do you react to them the way you do? How can you let them go? Is there a mantra you can repeat, I’m excited to write.
  • Write about the distraction. Turn it into a short story. Give it a plot, characters and have fun with it. If you have that many distractions you’ll have many stories to share. If you’re writing non-fiction turn it into an article and submit it to places. You might even find you make a few dollars because of it.
  • Talk to others about the distractions. Ask them how they deal with their distractions.

Life is always going to be full of distractions. The important thing is how you deal with it and how quickly you’ll be able to get back to your writing.

Keep Writing!
