“A writer who waits for ideal conditions under which to write will die without putting a word on paper.”
E.B. White, author
Have you ever felt that you can’t write if you’re not in a creative mood? You’re waiting for the writer’s muse as it’s commonly called or another word for inspiration, to show up. But, the writer’s muse is stubborn and rarely ever just shows up. It’s temperamental like a cat and has to be coaxed to come to you.
Inspiration is really the result of consistent habits. Once you train your brain that it’s okay to think of ideas, to play along with what you intend to do it’s less likely to run and hide. Our ego tries to protect us from getting hurt and when we think too long about something the brain begins to feel overwhelmed. To protect from harm the brain will distract you from your purpose. The next thing you know you’re raiding the refrigerator.
To coax your muse to come to you begin with a ritual. It could be any or all of these items.
- Set up your writing space with items that you associate with fun, relaxing or inspiring.
- Have your favorite drink or snack.
- Wear a hat or scarf. This gets the brain into the thinking process that each time you wear the item it’s time to write.
- Play background music if it’s not distracting.
- Turn the lights down or burn a candle, maybe spray a favorite perfume.
- Get dressed up or put on makeup.
- If you have a room to yourself close the door to block out any noise.
It may be difficult the first time to find inspiration but with repeated action you’ll begin to feel more comfortable and your muse will be ready to play.
Keep writing!
